With the cold weather inching closer, it can mean only one thing: Snow is near.  Make sure you do the little things to help keep you and your family safe once the bad weather hits:

- Make sure your driveway, sidewalks, walkways, and stairs are shoveled, and be sure to put salt or sand down for better footing (buy salt and sand now before it’s too late…remember last year?)

- Buy a roof shovel with an extender to avoid ice dams or worse (again, remember last year?)

- If you leave your  house unattended for a long period of time, make sure to keep your heat at an appropriate level so the pipes do not freeze.  Additionally, try draining your water system by shutting off the main valve and letting the water run in your home until it stops.  No water in the pipes, no frozen pipes.

- Once you have taken all of your precautionarymeasures, be sure to look over your auto, home, and business policies with your agent to make sure you are adequately covered.  Some accidents are unavoidable, despite your best efforts, and you should make sure that in case something does happen, you have the proper coverages in place.
